‘We collaborated with sculptor Glynis Owen who created this abstract aluminium bas-relief with ever-changing textures, complex enough never to become boring.’ Dale Loth, architect
‘Regolith’ is the loose material that covers the earth’s surface and provides one of
the important factors for most life.
Glynis Owen developed her latest large-scale project in close collaboration with the architects who commissioned it. This extensive exploration in creating a memorable, site-specific work, produced a three panel aluminium relief, evolved from landscape images. Cast from graded sands with some areas burnished, 'Regolith' changes dramatically with the time of day and viewpoint.
‘My concept is something abstract and quite shallow in relief, ideally in aluminium’
Taking the architect’s initial brief, the idea developed from a series of drawings made in St Ives, based on collaged pencil rubbings taken from rock, sand and baked clay surfaces. The drawing was enlarged to the exact dimensions and recreated as three large panels modelled in various types of sand. Plaster was poured, to flow gently across the surface of the sand, capturing and preserving the lines, texture and detail created by the sculptor. When the plaster had set the three plaster panels were transported to the foundry, cast into aluminium, then burnished and polished to emphasize the contrasting textures and reflective surface of the bas-relief. |
